General Program Description
Cumberland County elementary
schools provide students with a strong academic foundation for lifelong
learning. A comprehensive education is designed and implemented by
knowledgeable staff to ensure successful growth and development of the
whole child.
Program Goals
Cumberland County Elementary Schools will provide instructional opportunities that:
- Meet the academic, social, physical, and emotional needs of children
- Expect academic growth for all children
- Provide a safe and orderly environment where learning takes place
- Focus on preparing students to think critically, work cooperatively, and strive for high
standards
- Prepare students to meet the challenge of an advanced, technological society
The goal of Elementary
Education is to support and serve the needs of every elementary school.
The associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction, executive
director of elementary education, and two directors work to provide
expertise and support for our 54 elementary schools. In addition, four
curriculum specialists provide training and support in the area of
language arts, math, science, and social studies. These specialists
provide ongoing staff development activities centered around current
trends, best practices, prevention, and intervention strategies. Services
are delivered in model laboratory classroom settings and through on-site
follow-up visits to teachers’ classrooms. Two district literacy coaches
provide literacy support to each of our teacher literacy coaches at the
school sites through professional development, research, and site visits.
A school improvement coordinator assists at least four of our elementary
schools to enhance the instructional program at their school.
Title I services are
provided to designated schools. The Title I executive director and staff
coordinate federal, state, and district mandates and provide support for
school-wide programs, targeted assisted programs, interventions,
remediation, technical assistance, parent involvement activities, and
staff development. Currently,
14 Reaching Teachers work with first grade students at designated schools
to support the reading needs of at-risk students.
Elementary
teachers in Cumberland County are involved in planning and implementing a
curriculum designed to meet state and district goals, standards, and
benchmarks. Teachers join curriculum coordinators, directors, and
superintendents in developing and revising task analyses that are aligned
with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in all curriculum
areas.
Professional development
and growth is supported and encouraged among educators at all levels in
our elementary education program. Principals, teachers, and para-professionals
take full advantage of growth opportunities by attending
national conferences as well as those provided locally. |
